While most are still hitting the snooze button, Jonathan Storch is already deep in the woods of Trout Run, getting the job done.

There’s a quiet beauty in the grind. This stunning shot, captured by our Forester Chris Route, shows the “office” at 5:56 AM—where the only heat comes from the engine and the only light comes from the rig cutting through the winter mist.

Today, we are honoring a true legend at Cummings Lumber Company. Our Maintenance Man, Garth Nash, is celebrating an incredible 51 years with us!

If these walls—and machines—could talk, they’d tell the story of a man who has quite literally built this company from the ground up. Garth’s journey is the definition of “starting from the bottom and mastering it all”:

The Early Days: He started out piling lumber at the old sorting shed (a spot that’s been gone for years!).

A Man of Many Hats: He spent 10 years in the log yard, delivered sawdust to local farmers, and spent 2 years behind the wheel of our triaxle log trucks.

Built to Last: Garth has worked through three fires, helping us rebuild stronger every single time.

The Master Builder: From pouring concrete foundations to fabricating steelwork for the McDonough and Ceereman headsaws, Garth’s fingerprints are on everything. He’s fabricated conveyors and installed resaws, edgers, and chippers. If it’s in our mill, Garth likely had a hand in building, installing or repairing it.

Garth isn’t just a “fix-it” guy; he’s a proactive leader. Whether he’s diagnosing a noisy electric motor (as seen in the photo!) or jumping into the heat of a repair with his team, his dedication is nothing short of inspirational.

Garth, thank you for your loyalty, your grit, and your 51 years of service. We truly cannot say enough good things about you!

Take a look at this 360-degree view from the log landing, courtesy of our driver, Jonathan Storch. While we’re all staying warm in the office or shop, Jonathan was facing a crisp -5 degrees this morning! 🥶

He’s been busy hauling out some beautiful hard and soft maple logs. We love getting a “bird’s-eye view” from Jonathan’s seat—it really shows the scale of where our lumber begins.

Our drivers are the backbone of the supply chain, and we’re proud to have a team that handles these tough winter conditions with ease.

Today is a major milestone at Cummings Lumber Company! We are incredibly proud to celebrate John Beers for his 31st anniversary with the team.

As a Lumber Inspector / Grader, John is the definition of a “pro’s pro.” If you’ve worked with our lumber, chances are John’s expert eye has ensured it meets the highest standards. After three decades, there isn’t much he hasn’t seen in the mill!

John, thank you for your incredible service, your unwavering dedication, and for being such an integral part of the Cummings Lumber family. Here’s to many more!

4 years of growth, precision, and dedication!

We want to set the record straight and offer a sincere apology to Michael Sharer for the mix-up in our previous post. Michael’s journey at Cummings Lumber Company has been one of hard work and many hats, and we want to make sure we celebrate his actual path!

Michael started with us as a Lumber Handler, moved up to Trimmer Operator, and is currently our expert Debarker Operator.

As the man behind the debarker, Michael handles a vital first step in our production process with a sharp eye and total commitment to quality. We are so proud to have watched him grow his skills over the last 4 years and are lucky to have his experience on our team!
